Why the major/minor hierarchy matters

A single-weight grid forces you to count every line to know where you are. The two-level hierarchy fixes that: minor lines carry the detail, and a bold major line every N minors creates a coarse coordinate frame on top of the fine one. With five 1 mm minors per major, a major square is 5 mm on a side — you can dimension a sketch in half-centimetres directly off the page, the way a machinist reads a rule.

The generator reports both counts in the output summary — minor columns and rows, and the derived major columns and rows — so you can confirm the hierarchy before printing. The optional border frames the grid like a drafting sheet and marks the edge of the usable area.

What is engineering paper used for?

Lab notebooks, circuit schematics, control-system sketches, free-body diagrams and hand-drawn detail drawings — anywhere a technical sketch must be both precise and legible. The fine minors accept component symbols and dimension lines; the bold majors keep the whole drawing aligned and measurable. Students use it for engineering coursework; technicians use it for field sketches that need to survive a photocopy, where the heavier majors stay readable when the minors fade.

For 3D sketches on the same sheet reach for isometric paper, and for data spanning many orders of magnitude, logarithmic paper. Plain graph paper covers general plotting without the border.

A scale drawing is only as good as its scale, so the print dialog is the enemy. Set Scale to 100% — never “Fit to page” — match the paper size to your stock, and verify the major grid: ten 5 mm major squares must span exactly 50 mm.

Check the majors, not the minors

Measuring across several major squares amplifies any scaling error so you can spot it. If the majors are short, your printer rescaled the sheet — the calibration page computes the exact correction factor.

Why 1 mm minor with 5 mm major?

It is the metric drafting convention: five minor squares make one major square, so a major square is a clean 5 mm on a side and dimensions read directly in half-centimetres. The 1 mm minor is fine enough to place a line accurately by eye without being so dense that the page turns grey. For inch work the equivalent is 1/10-inch minors with a 1/2-inch major — also five minors per major.
