Which ruling should I choose?
Ruling is named by the gap between lines, and the four US standards are defined in thirty-seconds of an inch. College (9/32″) is the default for a reason: it fits average adult handwriting with room to spare. Go wider if your lowercase letters brush the line above; go narrower if you want more lines per page and your script is small and controlled.

College ruled vs wide ruled — which fits my handwriting?
Write a sentence on each and look at the x-height — the body of lowercase letters like a, e and o, ignoring ascenders and descenders. Comfortable handwriting fills roughly two-thirds of the gap; if your x-height touches the line above, the ruling is too tight and your writing will smear and slant. Most adults land on college (7.1 mm); wide (8.7 mm) is the standard for children’s primary notebooks and for anyone with a larger hand or tremor.
Because the spacing here is exact rather than approximate, you can also trust the yield numbers: switching from wide to college on the same page genuinely buys you six extra lines, which adds up across a notebook’s worth of notes.
What do the margin rule and header block do?
The margin rule is the vertical line running down the left side of a classic notebook, drawn here 31.75 mm (1.25″) from the left margin and tinted red like the original. It marks the indentation boundary for paragraphs and leaves a gutter for corrections, annotations and binding. Switch it off for clean prose pages.
The header block reserves the top of the sheet with two wider-spaced rules for name, date and subject — the “Name / Date / Class” rows of a classroom handout — before the body ruling begins. Both options are toggles in the presets and the Studio.
How do I print lined paper at the correct size?
Mis-scaled lined paper is more annoying than mis-scaled graph paper, because you notice it immediately: handwriting drifts off the rules as you move down the page. The fix is always the same — print at 100% scale, never “Fit to page”, and make sure the dialog’s paper size matches the sheet in the tray. A Letter PDF forced onto A4 stock will be rescaled whether you like it or not.
