What is graph paper used for?

The square lattice turns blank paper into a measuring instrument. Students use it for algebra and calculus homework — plotting y = f(x), shading regions, sketching transformations. Engineers and architects sketch floor plans and part drawings to scale, because each square is a known physical length. Scientists plot data by hand; knitters and crocheters chart stitch patterns; pixel artists and game designers lay out sprites on the same grid their screens use.

The common requirement across all of it is trust in the spacing. A grid that is “about 5 mm” ruins a scale drawing the way a stretched ruler would — which is why every sheet here is generated from the exact conversion 1 inch = 25.4 mm and exported as vector PDF rather than a rasterised image.

Which grid spacing should I choose?

Spacing is a trade-off between resolution and readability. Finer grids hold more detail per page but make individual squares harder to count; coarser grids read at a glance but quantise your drawing more aggressively. The table gives the density you actually get on a standard sheet with 12.7 mm (half-inch) margins.

Densities assume 12.7 mm margins; the generator reports the exact column and row count for your margins in the output summary.

How do I print graph paper at actual size?

The PDF is dimensionally perfect; the threat is your print dialog. Browser print dialogs default to helpful-sounding options — “Fit to printable area”, “Shrink oversized pages” — that silently rescale the sheet, typically by 3–7%. On graph paper that error is invisible until you measure: a 5 mm square becomes 4.7 mm, and every scale drawing built on it is wrong.

The one rule: never use “fit to page”.

Set Scale to 100% (or “Actual size”), match the paper size in the dialog to the physical stock — a Letter PDF on A4 stock forces a rescale — and turn off headers and footers. Then check ten squares with a ruler: 50.0 mm for a 5 mm grid, 2.500″ for a quarter-inch grid. If your printer still drifts, the calibration page computes the exact correction factor in one measurement.

Graph paper or grid paper — what’s the difference?

Grid paper is the generic term for any uniform square lattice. Graph paper, in the traditional sense, adds a second layer: a heavier “major” line every fifth or tenth square, so intervals can be read without counting individual cells — the difference between a lattice and a coordinate system. This generator gives you both from one control: set the major interval to draw graph paper, or switch it off for a pure uniform grid.
